2024
A Year of Impact
A Message from Kelly King, Executive Director
As the nonprofit, philanthropic partner to the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), the largest community college district in the country, we’re scaling up our capacity and sharpening our focus to match the big dreams and goals of the 200,000 students and 900 square miles we aim to serve.
2024 has been a year of incredible growth at the Foundation for the Los Angeles Community Colleges. We've raised more funds than ever before, launched our most ambitious project to date, awarded thousands of scholarships, welcomed eight amazing new board members, and initiated a strategic planning process to guide our work forward.
I'm so proud of the partnerships we've built and continue to be inspired by our students who often navigate through immense obstacles with such grace and determination.
We are grateful to our supporters for joining us in our mission to ensure that every Angeleno has access to affordable, high-quality postsecondary education and career training opportunities. Thank you for joining us in this work and this season of ambitious growth.

Supporting Student Parents
In 2024, the Foundation for the Los Angeles Community Colleges made significant strides in supporting student parents.
With nearly one-third of students identifying as parents or caregivers, the Foundation’s initiatives included expanding data collection through student surveys, advocating for priority registration, and launching the first-ever scholarships and endowed fund dedicated to student parents.
As part of these efforts, the Foundation partnered with UNITE-LA to share the collected data, resulting in the creation of the “Empowering L.A. Parenting Students for College Success” report.
The Foundation also supported the growth of Family Resource Centers and partnered with organizations like Raise the Barr to deliver targeted programs to student parents in the San Fernando Valley.
These initiatives have provided essential resources and opportunities to help parenting students balance their educational goals with family responsibilities. From diaper giveaways to state-wide convenings, we are proud to support the multi-generational impacts of a college degree by steering the generosity of our donors and supporters to these impactful programs.
My educational journey as a student parent has been a challenging yet transformative experience...College has been a lifeline for me and my family, providing crucial support such as daycare for my children during classes, assistance with books, and even meals when money was tight. It has been a beacon of hope in challenging times, helping me to not only pursue my academic goals but also to provide for my family. - S.J.
I would also like to give thanks to the school for believing in me and giving me hope to be somebody, and accomplish something that can never be taken from me...
I am breaking generational curses as we speak I am showing my children and family that we can be whatever we want to be all we have to do is get up and keep on going...Some parents are barely making it and doing their best to be here and make good grades, on top of being a parent. So to know that there is someone at the school that cares enough to help out and show support .. is amazing and I want to personally thank you for your kind gestures and caring heart. - I.W.
I want to first want to say, "THANK YOU"! This was a true blessing to receive this scholarship. I am a mother of two daughters that are 11 and 13…The reason why this scholarship is important to my success is because my daughters see the potential in me and what I am doing to make our life better...
I want to honestly thank you in really seeing me as a student parent. I just want to make a difference not just for my daughters but also for myself. I feel that this is just the first step to be coming a nurse and the gateway for more opportunities to come. -K.H.
A Big “BOOST” For Our Students
In November 2024, the Foundation launched its most ambitious effort to date. BOOST—Building Outstanding Opportunities for Students to Thrive— a transformative program designed to bridge the gap between financial aid, wages, and the rising cost of living for students in the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD).
BOOST is a Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) program that will provide $1,000 per month for 12 months in unconditional cash payments to a cohort of 251 students, with a particular emphasis on those pursuing careers in clinical, allied, or behavioral health.
The program focuses on four LACCD colleges: East LA College, LA City College, LA Trade-Technical College, and LA Southwest College. Over the year-long program, a total of $3 million will be granted to students.
Through a mixed method, randomized control trial led by the University of Pennsylvania, BOOST will also provide insights into the lives of LACCD students and how to improve programming and philanthropic efforts to support their success.
The program is made possible through $4 million+ in private funding from The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation and the Young Adults Forward Fund, an initiative of the California Community Foundation.
BOOST will be the largest GBI program for community college students in the U.S. to date and the first to include a Randomized Control Trial (RCT).
The first monthly payments reached students just before Thanksgiving.
